Celebrating UN Day in Azerbaijan

UNO Baku Celebrates International Day of the Girl Child

IMG_0505On the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child, UNO Baku, jointly with the International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF) and State Agency for public Service and Social Innovations (ASAN Service), held a roundtable discussion on the importance of empowering girls and ensuring their human rights.

The event took place at the IEPF’s training centre located at the Head Office in Baku on 10 October, bringing together students, journalists, and representatives of civil society including the SOS Family Strengthening Program. Continue reading

Importance of Literacy and Education for Sustainable Development

The event brought together young NGO representatives, community members and young teachers to discuss this year’s observance themed “Literacy and Sustainable Development”, with the aim of highlighting the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. UNO Baku Encouraging Youth to Get Involved in their Country’s Development

IMG_9241In observance of International Youth Day, UNO Baku in partnership with the Azerbaijan Youth Foundation and Educational Center for Youth, held a Model UN Workshop on 12 August. The event was held in Samukh, approximately 300 kilometers away from the capital Baku. The workshop attracted more than 30 determined young participants from various regions of Azerbaijan. The main aim of the event was to develop a better understanding of the UN’s work among youth and raise the awareness of the organization’s cause. In addition, UNO Baku’s team members along with other highly qualified experts, trained the participants in public speaking, debating, and writing skills. Moreover critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills elements were reflected during the Model UN simulation workshop.  Continue reading

UNO Baku Remembers Nelson Mandela

IMG_9112Marking the first Nelson Mandela International Day since Mandela’s death in December last year, UNO Baku, in partnership with the Baku Education Information Centre (BEIC), held an interactive session for youth and adolescents about the one of the world’s greatest public figures – Nelson Mandela.  The event took place at the BEIC’s on 18 July, inspiring Azerbaijani youth to volunteer and perform community service in order to honour Mandela’s legacy. Azerbaijani Youth Discusses their Priorities for the Global Post-2015 Development Agenda

The event took place in the framework of the second round of Post-2015 national consultations at UN House on 14 July 2014 and gave an opportunity for youth to influence the post-2015 development agenda. UNO Baku Organizes an Info-session on the Occasion of the World Refugee Day

The event was in recognition of World Refugee Day at the UN House for the purpose of highlighting the organization’s efforts to protect refugees and other displaced people across the globe. UNO Baku Raises the Red Card to Child Labour

18Joining the global campaign – “hold up a red card to child labor”, UNO Baku, in partnership with the Common Sense Youth Organization, visited the SOS Children Family Strengthening Program Office in Sumaqait to show their solidarity in giving children around the world a brand new start. The event took place on June 12, and focused on raising awareness about children’s rights and highlighted the role of social protection in keeping children out of the exploitive child labor environment. UNO Baku Encourages Azerbaijani Youth to be Environmental Sustainable

15To highlight the responsibility of young generations working for environmental sustainability, UNO Baku organized an educational tour to the country’s biggest environmentally oriented plants, the Balakhany Recycling Plant and the Solid Waste Resource Recovery Facility. Both sites are owned by “Tamiz Shahar” Joint Stock Company in Baku. The event took place on the 5th June 2014, with the participation of students from Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University’s Ecology Club and local, environmental organization Friends of Nature. Overall, the aim of the event was to raise environmental consciousness among the young generation in order to achieve a sustainable future for all. Continue reading

Azerbaijani Youth Discuss Actions Against Tobacco Use

IMG_6506Raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco use, the UNO Baku team visited ADA University on 30 May to hold an information session with ADA’s No Smoking Club and representatives of Common Sense Youth Organization (CSYO) on the effects of tobacco use and the various methods of fighting tobacco consumption. The event was attended by students from various universities and challenged currently smoking participants to give up the habit. Continue reading
