In order to raise awareness about the UN’s efforts in the field of refugees and forcibly displaced people, the UN Department of Public Information, in partnership with the UNHCR’s Office in Azerbaijan, organized an info-session for university students, on 20th of June. The event was in recognition of World Refugee Day at the UN House for the purpose of highlighting the organization’s efforts to protect refugees and other displaced people across the globe.
The session started with a reading of the Secretary General’s message on the World Refugee Day and continued with the screening of a brief documentary video about the UN’s activities. The video highlighted the organization’s efforts in resolving refugee problems worldwide. Latter, an educative presentation was given by Mr. Elsevar Aghayev, one of the UNHCR’s colleagues in Azerbaijan. “UNHCR was one of the first UN Agencies to open its office in Azerbaijan, after the Nagorniy Karabakh Conflict. Our agency provided protection, shelter and relief to those who became IDPs as a result of the conflict,” said Mr. Aghayev, while informing students about the UNHCR’s work. He also mentioned that the UNHCR carries out operations for refugees worldwide, which calculates to more than 50 million people who receive a variety of support including emergency housing, legal and financial aids, job trainings, proper placement and development of life standards.
As a final remark, the UNO Baku’s team member Mr. Zaka Guluyev said: “It is very important to annually observe the World Refugee Day because it raises the public’s awareness about the plight of refugees around the globe, and is also celebrated in order to support millions of families all over the world who have lost their homes and relatives because of violence, war and persecution.” Later, he thanked the students for their participation and their eagerness to learn more about the UN’s activities.
In the end, the students were also informed about internship opportunities at the UN Office in Azerbaijan, and the detailed information about how to apply was provided.
