On 21 May 2014, UNO Baku joined Azerbaijan University of Languages (AUL) in holding an event to mark the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. The event took place at AUL’s Folklore Center of the Information Resource Complex and brought together students, university professors, diplomats and local journalists to highlight the importance of cultural diversity for peace and sustainable development.

On May 14, a group of 2nd year honors students from Azerbaijan State Economic University, specializing in political economy and finance, visited for the first time the UN House in Baku. Co-organized by UN DPI and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Azerbaijan, the information session was opened by UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Antonius Broek. “I am glad to see so many young people who are driven by their interest in the UN’s work globally and in Azerbaijan. Today’s introduction may eventually stimulate your interest in the unique role played by the UN in development. Giving a voice to Azerbaijani and international students in their desires for a better world, UNO Baku, in cooperation with UNDP, conducted the “My World” Global Survey at ADA University on 5 May. Encouraging students to take part in shaping the future global development agenda, the UNO Baku team placed a stand in the Student Center of the university, to capture people’s voices, priorities and views, in defining a new development agenda for the world after 2015. UNO Baku celebrated English Language Day at Baku’s School No.6 on April 23, 2014, with the aim of entertaining and informing students of the history, culture and achievements associated with the English language. The agenda of the event included a trivia contest, which was conducted in English so as to highlight the importance of the day and improve the language skills of the high school students that attended the event. Joining in the worldwide celebration of International Mother Earth Day, UNO Baku, in partnership with Kempinski Badamdar Hotel and Park Cinema, screened documentary film, “Home”, by French photographer and journalist Yann Arthus-Bertrand on 22 April. With this year’s focus on green cities, the event brought together both government and NGOrepresentatives from the fields of ecology and environmental protection as well as various artists and journalists. The event, held at Kempinski Badamdar Hotel, overlooking Baku, represented a show of support from both the Azerbaijani leadership and civil society in steering Azerbaijan towards a more environmentally sustainable future. In observance of the first-ever International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, UNO Baku, in partnership with Generations for Peace Azerbaijan, Hilton Baku and “Sport for Development” Public Union, organized a round-table discussion to highlight the role of sport as a universal tool for peace. The event took place on April 5 at Hilton Baku Hotel and brought together representatives from various community organizations, the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Child Youth Football Federation, the Community Development Centre, the Refugee Women and Youth Centre, Youth Peer Education Network (Y-PEER) Azerbaijan, and other members of civil society to discuss the benefits of sport and a healthy lifestyle in the context of broader social development and peace. To raise awareness of the UN’s activities in the world, UNO Baku held an information session on April 4 for students majoring in journalism at Baku Slavic University. The session briefed students on the Millennium Development Goals and the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

To spread understanding of autism and to empower people living with autism, UN DPI, in collaboration with Autism-Children Development Center (PRIM), organized an informative and entertaining program on April 2 to mark World Autism Awareness Day. The event brought together children with autism and their parents, NGO and civil society members, and autism specialists from across the country, in what was hailed as significant public awareness boost for the cause and received considerable media attention.

In observance of ‘Week of Solidarity with the Peoples Struggling against Racism and Racial Discrimination’ (21-27 March) and to support elimination of racial discrimination and promotion of equality for all, UNO Baku held a survey to find out more about peoples attitudes towards racial discrimination. Aiming at strengthening public awareness about the UN’s work in the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women, the United Nations Department of Public Information held an informative session at the SOS Children’s Village in Sumgayit, to the north of Baku, on 14 March. This session was geared towards rural women who lack the economic stability to adequately support their households and sought to encourage them by screening a video about successful women in developing countries who managed to launch their businesses, at domestic level, to provide for their families.
